Belmont Park is exactly what most people think of when their minds drift off to the West Coast beachfront towns.

This historic amusement park offers a range of thrilling rides and attractions, all set against the beautiful backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. What makes Belmont Park even better is that there’s no cost for admission—it’s a pay-per-ride system. This makes it ideal for families and groups of friends who want to enjoy the park’s atmosphere without necessarily riding every ride (Breanna, I’m looking at you). You can choose exactly how much you want to spend based on the rides you decide to try, allowing everyone to have a good time, regardless of their thrill-seeking level.

There’s plenty to keep you busy at Belmont Park for 2-3 hours, from classic amusement park rides to games and delicious food. Nearly every area of the park that I saw was kept clean and tidy, which added to the overall enjoyment of the visit.

A highlight of the park is the Giant Dipper, a historic wooden roller coaster that dates back to 1925. 

This iconic ride is a must for any thrill-seeker, offering a classic roller coaster experience with breathtaking views of the ocean. The Giant Dipper is one of the few remaining wooden roller coasters on the West Coast, making it a unique attraction that draws people back for both the memories and the thrills. Its twists, turns, and drops are sure to get your adrenaline pumping.

Belmont Park isn’t just for adrenaline junkies, though. Numerous family-friendly rides and attractions cater to all ages, making it an ideal destination for the entire family. From the super cute mini-golf course to arcade games, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. 

Ocean Front Walk Boardwalk

Right off Belmont Park, the Ocean Front Walk is one of the most vibrant spots in Mission Beach, offering a blend of activity, scenery, and entertainment. 

This boardwalk is lined with smooth concrete, making it ideal for biking, rollerblading, and skateboarding. It’s a favorite among locals who want to enjoy a leisurely ride with the stunning Pacific Ocean as their backdrop.

As you make your way along the boardwalk, you’ll notice the eclectic mix of homes that line the path. From beach cottages to luxury properties, the diverse range of architecture contributes to the unique character of the area. These homes boast stunning ocean views, making them some of the most coveted real estate in San Diego.

The boardwalk is also a hub of activity thanks to the lively street performers and public art installations that dot the path. You’ll encounter musicians, dancers, and artists showcasing their talents, adding an extra layer of entertainment to your stroll or ride. Public art along the way further enhances the experience (and provides a great spot to stop and take even more pictures – get those phones handy!).

The scenic views from Ocean Front Walk are breathtaking. On one side, you have the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, with crashing waves and an endless horizon. On the other, you can catch glimpses of the nearby mountains, creating a picturesque contrast that’s hard to beat.

For those who enjoy people-watching, FIT Mission Beach is one of the best spots to take it all in. This bustling area of the boardwalk is always full of activity, from fitness enthusiasts working out on the beach to families enjoying a day in the sun. Grab a seat, relax, and watch the world go by—it’s the perfect way to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of Mission Beach.

Restaurants in Mission Beach

Mission Beach is not just about the sun and surf; it also boasts a variety of great dining options that cater to all tastes. Here are a few I recommend:

• Coaster Saloon is a fantastic spot located just across from Belmont Park.
  Known for its laid-back atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to grab a bite after a day of fun on the rides. The saloon pulls off really solid burgers at a reasonable price, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re looking for a classic cheeseburger or something with a bit more flair, Coaster Saloon delivers tasty, satisfying meals that won’t break the bank.

• For coffee lovers, Better Buzz Coffee is a must-visit.
  This adorable café not only has a charming, Instagram-worthy vibe but also offers an impressive selection of coffee options. Some standout choices include the Horchata Iced Coffee, a delightful blend of cinnamon and espresso, and the Mocha de Mexico, which adds a rich, chocolatey twist to your caffeine fix. It’s a great place to relax and recharge with a delicious drink (and even snack) in hand.
  
• While in Mission Beach, it’s also fun to explore new flavors. We once enjoyed a meal at a taco stand that, unfortunately, no longer exists. However, that experience taught us to always be on the lookout for new food adventures. If you find a new taco stand or food truck, don’t hesitate to give it a try—you might discover a new favorite!
  
• Molly’s on Mission Beach is another delightful spot worth mentioning. Known for its super cute decor and inviting atmosphere, Molly’s offers a menu that looks absolutely phenomenal. Whether you’re stopping by for a hearty breakfast or a leisurely lunch, the food here is sure to impress. With its cozy ambiance and delicious offerings, Molly’s is a great choice for a relaxed meal by the beach.

With so many great options to choose from, dining in Mission Beach is an experience in itself. Whether you’re fueling up for a day of adventure or winding down after a busy afternoon (as we were), these restaurants offer something for everyone.

Mission Bay Jetty Channel

The Mission Bay Jetty Channel is a popular spot for fishing in San Diego, especially for those looking to catch halibut and bass. The jetty itself is a long, rocky barrier that extends into the ocean, providing an ideal environment for various fish species. 

The channel’s deep waters and strong currents attract a wide range of marine life, making it a favorite among local and visiting anglers. The best times to fish here are early morning or late afternoon, when the fish are more active.

Graffiti Shack at Mission beach

For adventurous travelers, a visit to Graffiti Shack is a must. Located near Mission Bay Jetty, this spot is a hidden gem for those who love exploring off-the-beaten-path locations.

Graffiti Shack, also known as the “Jetty Shack,” is an old, abandoned structure covered in layers of vibrant street art. It started as a simple lifeguard station or fisherman’s hut many years ago, but as time passed, it fell into disrepair.

Artists and graffiti enthusiasts eventually took over the space, transforming it into a living canvas that showcases their creativity. 

Over the years, the shack has become a symbol of San Diego’s urban art scene, with new artwork regularly replacing older pieces, making every visit a unique experience. 

San Diego Surf School

For those looking to catch some waves, San Diego Surf School offers an excellent opportunity to learn how to surf. 

Located right in the heart of Mission Beach, the school is renowned for its friendly and professional instructors, who cater to all skill levels, from complete beginners to those seeking to refine their technique.

When I was there, I saw them working with their weekly students, and it was clear how dedicated they are to creating a fun and engaging learning environment.

 The session began with a run along the beach, a great way for students to warm up and get into the right mindset for surfing. This warm-up not only prepares the body but also builds a sense of camaraderie among participants, which is an essential part of the surfing culture.

The instructors at San Diego Surf School focus on teaching the basics of surfing, including safety, paddling techniques, wave selection, and how to stand up on the board. 

With a strong emphasis on ocean awareness and respect for the sea, students quickly learn that surfing is not just about catching waves but also about understanding the dynamic environment around them.

Whether you’re looking to take a single lesson or join a longer program, San Diego Surf School provides all the equipment you need, including wetsuits and surfboards.It’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the local surf culture!

Equipment Rentals at Cheap Rentals

For seasoned surfers or those who prefer to explore on their own, Cheap Rentals is the perfect spot to get all the gear you need. 

Located conveniently in Mission Beach, Cheap Rentals is a go-to for vacationers looking to enhance their beach experience without the hassle of bringing their own equipment.

As the name implies, Cheap Rentals offers quality gear at affordable prices, catering to all types of beachgoers. Whether you’re wanting to rent a surfboard to hit the waves or a bike to cruise along the scenic boardwalk, they have you covered. You can also find longboards, stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), kayaks, and even beach chairs for a more relaxed day by the ocean.

The variety of equipment available makes it easy to enjoy a full day of fun in the sun, regardless of your preferred activity. The staff at Cheap Rentals are knowledgeable and friendly, always ready to help you find the perfect gear for your adventure.

Beach Games at South Mission Beach

South Mission Beach is a vibrant spot for those looking to get active and enjoy some friendly competition. Known for its sport-oriented atmosphere, this area offers a variety of courts and playing fields that attract both locals and visitors who love beach sports.

• Basketball Courts: If you’re up for a game of hoops, South Mission Beach has well-maintained basketball courts where you can shoot some baskets or join a pick-up game. The courts are often bustling with activity, especially in the afternoons and on weekends, providing a fun and energetic environment for players of all skill levels.
  

• Sand Volleyball Courts: The beach is also lined with sand volleyball courts, perfect for those who enjoy a game of beach volleyball. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just looking to have some fun with friends, the courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s a great way to meet new people and enjoy the sun, sand, and sea.
  
• Over-The-Line (OTL) Playing Area: Unique to the San Diego area, Over-The-Line (OTL) is a popular beach game similar to softball, but with its own set of rules and a smaller playing area. South Mission Beach is one of the few places where you can find dedicated OTL courts, making it a must-try for anyone looking to experience a local tradition. The annual OTL tournament held here draws large crowds and is a highlight for many beachgoers.

These sports facilities make South Mission Beach an ideal destination for those seeking more than just leisurely activities on their trip.
