Running the Castaway Cay 5K: All Great Things You Must Know
The one thing Nevaeh and I both knew we wanted to do before we sailed on our first cruise was do the Castaway Cay 5K- and it did not disappoint! We had a great time exploring the island as we ran along the course. Having our first Disney run medal was the icing on the cake, if you will.
Now, my friends, I have some tips and tricks to help you have the best experience.
How to Sign Up
Before 2020, you had to sign up for the Castaway Cay 5K but now you just start at the Bike Rental stand and follow the path (there will be signs). If you are anything like us, they will know that you completed it!
There are benefits and drawbacks to this approach. The benefits include the ability to start and stop at your own pace, making it more like a “fun run” that can be enjoyed with the whole family, with no official timing. This also means you will no longer be able to meet up with other runners or receive a bib.
Logistics & Gear Tips
I recommend bringing a bag with your spare clothes, shoes, or sandals in it. For the run, get your tennis shoes. Granted, we chose to do this as if we were working out, since, well, it was preparation for our Disney Wine and Dine 5K that we plan to run next year.
There are no lockers available to store your items if you are going it alone, but a storage area is located near the entrance to the race. This is close to where the cast members are working, so they will have an eye on it. I recommend bringing a fanny pack if you have items that are extra valuable. You can also run early and go back to your stateroom before lounging.
If you have a crew with you, have them take it to the meetup location as well.
Castaway Key 5K Course Information
The path is pretty straightforward, with arrows guiding you along the route. Basically, it takes you to Serenity Bay as the loop around area.
I will say, there isn’t much in the way of shade, so be sure to slather on some sunscreen before the run.
I also suggest stopping for photos at points of interest, such as the airstrip, near the observation tower, and, of course, at the finish sign.

Everything You Need to Know
Fuel Up Early
I highly recommend that you eat something before embarking on this adventure. Obviously, nothing too heavy but make sure to add a small amount of carbs to keep you going. Oatmeal, fruit, or a muffin with coffee will help you run strong in the Bahamian humidity (and it’s wicked!).
Run Early
As I mentioned, there is not much shade, so be sure to run early. Then you have plenty of time to sit ocean-side and take in the beautiful weather.
Bring All Other Needed Items With You
If you are alone, I have already mentioned the drop-off point, but it’s worth re-emphasizing that I would bring things of most concern to you, such as your key to the world card, ID, and debit/credit card. Pack a fanny pack in your luggage for the cruise.
I recommend bringing a water bottle with you. Many fanny packs now come with a place to store them! If this is not feasible, though, you can always stop for a drink at the halfway point near Serenity Bay.
Post Run Cool Down
There are outdoor showers located near the restrooms at the finishing point, but none are available inside, so please keep that in mind. Nevaeh and I opted to stay in our running clothes until we got back with the other two, and it wasn’t too bad. You can also bring wet wipes to wipe down if you are concerned about it- I mean, hey, it gives you another great reason to carry that awesome fanny pack!
Castaway Cay 5K Final Thoughts
Running the Castaway Cay 5K was one of those experiences that perfectly blended adventure, fitness, and Disney magic. It wasn’t about beating a personal record—it was about soaking in the sunshine, taking in those turquoise island views, and earning a little medal that now holds big memories.
If you’re heading on a Disney Cruise soon, I can’t recommend this experience enough. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking for a fun way to explore the island before a beach day, the Castaway Cay 5K is the perfect mix of movement and magic.
