Castaway Cay Tips and Tricks: Your Ultimate Guide to Mickey’s Paradise

Here are my Castaway Cay tips and tricks for you! Castaway Cay was the second stop on our Disney cruise. We enjoyed the quiet, downtime we had, though we weren’t relaxing the whole time. Nevaeh and I ran the 5K, then later, Mom and I went to the waterslides.

What to Bring With You to Castaway Cay

One of my biggest Castaway Cay tips and tricks is to make sure to bring a few things from your stateroom. Here are some suggestions:

  • Sunscreen– maybe pack reef-safe ones, and don’t forget to reapply! I will say, my crew was very good at this for once.
  • Swimsuit– either wear it under your clothes or pack it, depending on what your day looks like.
  • A change of clothes- especially if you’re running the 5K, it’s nice to be dry afterwards! Sweaty clothes are gross.
  • Sunglasses – If you have polarized ones, they are great for reducing glare off the water.
  • Water shoes or sandals are recommended, as some areas are rocky and hot, especially near the slides and beaches.
  • Towel Clips– I recommend these in general, but another great reason to have them: your towels are safe from the wind.
  • Refillable water bottle– oh, how I wish I had brought one. This is one of my biggest learning lessons for our first Disney cruise.
  • Snorkel Gear – If you prefer your gear over Disney’s rentals (added bonus: it’s cheaper to have your own!).
  • Waterproof Phone Case or Dry Bag – Protects your phone and valuables if you’re kayaking, biking, or just paranoid about splashes.
  • Photo ID & Key to the World Card – You’ll need these to get off and back on the ship.
  • Castaway Cay 5K Running Gear – If participating: running shoes, breathable outfit, and maybe a fitness tracker.
  • Small Backpack or Beach Bag – To carry all of the above with ease.

Where is Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay (pronounced key) is Disney Cruise Line’s private island paradise, nestled in the Bahamas. It’s located about 225 nautical miles from Port Canaveral, Florida. The island itself is part of the Abaco chain in the northern Bahamas and spans about 1,000 acres, though only a portion is developed for guests. Disney leased the island from the Bahamian government and transformed it into a tropical getaway.

You can only visit Castaway Cay on a Disney cruise, which keeps the experience exclusive and uncrowded!

Castaway Cay Tips and Tricks

Arriving at Castaway Cay

One of the best things about arriving at Castaway Cay is that Disney owns the whole island, so you are not competing with people on other ships. We opted to have a leisurely breakfast and then went back to our room to grab our essentials before heading down.

If you’re worried about chairs and umbrellas, they are first come, first served, but when we were there, it wasn’t a struggle to get a good seat.

When you get off, there will be crew members offering you a towel, and then the tram will take you to the area you’d like to go to, including Pelican Plunge and Serenity Bay.

Travelling Around Castaway Cay

Trams

When you step off the ship, you’ll see the open-air trams waiting to take you down the island. The first stop is Scuttles Cove (Kid’s Club) and Family Beach. Then there is Pelican Plunge, Cabanas, or Serenity Bay (the adults-only area).

When we went, Nevaeh and I got off at the Pelican Plunge area and went to the bike rental shack to start our 5K run. There were maps that helped.

These trams run all day long and are a huge help if you’re carrying bags, beach gear, or babies.

Rent a bike

You can rent a bike from the rental station near the family beach area. The bike trail is about a mile long and loops around the island. This bike cruise has some cool lookout points, including one with a view of the ship and an old airstrip leftover from the island’s former life.

Mobility issue notes:

Disney has thoughtfully accommodated guests with mobility issues by making the trams wheelchair accessible and providing sand wheelchairs for use. They are also cool-looking – a bonus!

The Beaches at Castaway Cay

The shoreline is divided into three main beach areas, each offering something a little different depending on what kind of day you’re looking for:

Family Beach

This is the first beach and one of the most popular. This beach has plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas, as well as a calm lagoon perfect for swimming or floating. It’s close to the Pelican Plunge water slide, In Da Shade Games Pavilion, and Cookie’s BBQ.

I’m going to give a shout-out to Pelican Plunge here- this floating platform, just off the Family Beach, is one of Castaway Cay’s biggest hits. It has two waterslides, a giant bucket splash zone, and a rope-climbing challenge. You have to swim out to get there, though, heads up!

Serenity Bay- adults only

If you want to steer away from the younger crowd, stay on the tram and get off at Serenity Bay. Located at the far end of the island, this 18+ only beach is full of quiet, chill vibes. They also have their own dedicated Serenity Bay BBQ, which has upgraded options, sometimes including steak.

Teen hideout- for ages 14-17

This area, tucked between the family beach and Serenity Bay, is exclusive for teens. They even have low-key activities that youth counselors host.

Character Meet and Greet

We saw Donald Duck, complete with his snorkel gear, right after we got off the ship. This is one of the easiest spots to catch a quick moment with a character before heading to the beach. There is also the character gazebo, and occasionally, they are found in the family beach area near the BBQ Spots. Rumor has it, Lilo and Stitch have been seen recently!

The Food at Castaway Cay

There are three main barbecue spots on the island, all serving the same menu:

  • Cookie’s BBQ – Near the Family Beach, this is the most popular dining location and closest to where most families hang out.
  • Cookie’s Too BBQ – A little further down the beach (and slightly less crowded), but still near Family Beach.
  • Serenity Bay BBQ – This one is for adults only, located at the adults-only beach. It sometimes has a couple of extra options (like ribeye or grilled fish) and feels a bit more relaxed and quiet.

All locations are open from around 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., but check your Navigator app or onboard schedule to confirm.

The typical fair is BBQ ribs, hamburger/cheeseburger, hot dogs or brats, grilled chicken, fresh fruit, cole slaw, corn on the cob, potato salad, and chips. For dessert, you have the option of chocolate chip cookies, brownies, or soft-serve ice cream (the day we went, the specialty option was strawberry or banana flavored). They do have veggie burgers and allergy-friendly options, just ask a cast member for assistance.

Naturally, the drinks such as soft drinks, lemonade, iced tea, and water are complimentary and near where you get your food. If you want some adult beverages, there are several bars across the island, such as Castaway Air Bay (at Serenity Bay) or Conched Out Bar (near Family Beach), serving up cold beer, tropical cocktails, and frozen drinks. These are not included, so they’ll be charged to your stateroom.

Shopping on Castaway Cay

If you’re looking for island-exclusive souvenirs or, perhaps, you forgot your sunscreen, Castaway Cay has several small shops that are perfect for browsing.

We spent most of our shopping time (and money) at She Sells Sea Shells…and Everything Else. This is the main gift shop on the island, and you can pick up Castaway Cay-exclusive merch, Disney Cruise Line gear with island or nautical themes, beach essentials, and even a few kids’ toys, including beach pails and inflatables.

There is also Buy the Seashore, which is located closer to Serenity Bay (the adults-only beach). This smaller shop has a more relaxed vibe and a few of the same Castaway Cay items, plus essentials you might need if you didn’t bring enough with you.

I just learned that there is also the Cultural Outpost, a kiosk-style booth that focuses on locally made Bahamian crafts and souvenirs, including hand-carved items, conch shell jewelry, woven baskets, and other artisan goods. What a fun way to support the locals!

What to Know Before You Shop
  • No cash or credit cards needed — All purchases on Castaway Cay are charged to your Key to the World card, just like on the ship.
  • Duty-free shops are not on Castaway Cay — you’ll find those in Nassau or other Caribbean ports, but not here.
  • Prices are similar to what you’d find in the parks or on board, but again, the exclusivity makes it worth it for many.

Port Adventure Options at Castaway Cay

We opted not to do any port adventures this go round because we wanted to learn more about the area before we decided on anything. Plus, Nevaeh and I had our hearts set on doing the 5K. Here are some of the options you have:

  • Bike Rentals: This one is free! The rentals are perfect for exploring the island’s paved trails, scenic overlooks, and old airstrip. Rentals typically include a bike, helmet, and a child seat if needed, and the loop is easy to ride for most ages.
  • Snorkeling: Castaway Cay has a designated snorkeling area right off Family Beach, with two sections: one shallow and beginner-friendly, and one deeper with sunken “treasures” like a hidden Mickey statue and a submarine. If you didn’t bring your gear, you can rent a snorkel, fins, and a vest through Disney.
  • Banana Boat: For guests looking for some fast-paced fun, this adventure zips you around the lagoon on an inflatable banana-shaped raft pulled by a speedboat. It’s a splashy, silly time and best for older kids, teens, and adults.
  • Kayak, Paddleboard, or Aqua Trike Rentals: These are first-come, first-served unless pre-booked, and are a fun, low-key way to enjoy the ocean.
  • Glass-Bottom Boat Tour (Availability Varies): Occasionally offered, this guided tour gives you a peek at the underwater world without getting wet — a great option for families with younger kids or anyone who prefers to stay dry but still see marine life.
  • Massage Cabanas at Serenity Bay: Not your typical “adventure,” but worth mentioning: you can book a massage in an open-air cabana with an ocean view at the adults-only beach. These are popular and go fast!
Note: Most excursions last between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours, so you’ll still have time to lounge or eat afterward.

Special Experiences at Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay 5K

While it’s technically free and not a timed race, the Castaway Cay 5K is a fun run that takes you on a marked path around the island. You’ll get a finisher medal and some island bragging rights (we even had a lady get so excited when she saw ours). It’s done at your own pace- so you can run any time of the day that you’d like. Nevaeh and I opted to do it first thing!

Final Thoughts on Visiting Castaway Cay

No matter if you decide to soak up the sun at Serenity Bay, go splashing at Pelican Plunge, or run your first-ever 5K, this island is Disney magic with a touch of the Bahamas. So take it all in and remember, you earned it!
