Daily Gratitude List: Changing My Life with 5 Happy Thoughts

I am so excited to start this section of my website- I’ve been thinking about my daily gratitude list for a few days now. Why is this so important? Well, we all need to stay positive to persevere through the difficult. My goal is to write five things a day that have made me happy. Let’s dive into this a bit more.

What is a Daily Gratitude List?

A daily gratitude list is precisely what it sounds like. It’s a list of things you are grateful for. This can be any number of your choice- typically three to five things.

When you do this, you focus on the positive aspects of your life and cultivate an attitude of appreciation. This simple act can help improve your overall well-being and shift your perspective from what you lack to what you have.

Also, it doesn’t have to be in a blog like mine; it can be in a book or on your phone. You can be as creative as you want. I wanted to do it this way to help you generate ideas, as well as to encourage me to write daily.

Daily Gratitude List Benefits

I mentioned above that gratitude helps shift your perspective from what you lack to what you have. Given this information, it’s not surprising that studies have shown that practicing gratitude can lead to increased happiness, improved mood, and a greater sense of overall well-being. Let’s dive in a bit deeper. According to a UCLA study, this list could lead to:

  • Reducing depression: There have been over seventy studies done that look at 26,000 people, which have found an association between higher levels of gratitude and lower levels of depression. They are unsure of the cause but believe it has a hamster wheel effect: gratitude lessens the symptoms of depression, allowing people to recognize what they have, which in turn gives them gratitude, and the cycle continues.
  • Lessening Anxiety: Here’s one that might be a big thing for me right now (so glad I wrote this post!), Anxiety often involves worrying and negative thinking, and most often it’s about things that happened in the past or may occur in the future. Gratitude can be a coping tool for anxiety, combating negative thinking patterns by keeping thoughts focused on the present.
  • Heart health supports: This one came as a bit of a surprise to me but it makes sense because lowering your depression will help reduce heart issues. Going beyond journaling, even thinking positive thoughts in challenging moments, helps your heart by slowing and regulating your breathing to synchronize with your heartbeat.
  • Stress Relief: Practicing daily gratitude can help break the stress cycle. By focusing on what you appreciate, you engage your parasympathetic nervous system — the part of your body that promotes rest and recovery, which helps counteract the effects of chronic stress. This creates physiological changes that support a calmer state. Gratitude can help lower your heart rate and blood pressure, slow your breathing, and encourage your body to relax.
  • Improved Sleep: People who consistently practice gratitude often develop a more positive outlook, which motivates them to pursue habits that support better sleep, things like eating nutritious foods, staying active, and winding down at night. Gratitude can also help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, all of which are significant factors in poor sleep quality and shorter sleep duration. Research shows that feeling thankful can boost thoughts about supportive relationships and satisfying life experiences, helping you fall asleep with a calmer, more peaceful mind.

Which is what you do when you have a daily Gratitude List

Most Beneficial Time to Use a Daily Gratitude List

Mornings

By reviewing and working on your daily gratitude list in the morning, you are setting a positive tone for the day. Additionally, it helps you to have a clear focus on what your priorities should be in the broader context.

evenings

This is when I plan to write my daily gratitude list, as it allows me to reflect on the day and find positive nuggets, even on less-than-stellar days. Then I can wind down and de-stress before I head off to sleep.

When life gets tough

When life gets tough, it’s sometimes necessary to shift our perspective. This is something I’m currently going through in my life. My life is not bad, but I’m struggling with some things and am going to therapy for it.

That all said, about two weeks ago, I began to shift my thoughts to what I can control. And one of those things is my attitude of gratitude, hence why I’m here.
